Behind The Brushes

I'm sitting in the living room of my townhouse on a cream seude couch, one of our  little decorative pillows is protecting my lap from the heat of the laptop. Covered in circles made with tweed and cotton, the tan and red circles play off of the black fabric with the hint of gold metallic. A window remains open behind me so the synphony of wind and rain occurring outside acts as white noise. My wine glass sits on the window sill, the air drifting through keeping it chilled. I can hear the muted Neo-soul music coming from the family room, where my husband sits with my children as they discuss their laatest drawings. Tonight is calm in the Taylor household and it leaves me feeling incredibly blissful.
Being a stay at home to three small children and a wife this is not what all of my evenings are like but these are the types of evenings that I get inspired to create. It's these types of evenings where I can read a makeup book, chat with other creatives, or just plan a new project. Tonight inspired to introduce myself and my business and what better way to do that than with a Q&A?

Q: When did you notice you had a passion for makeup artistry?

A: I didn't notice I had a passion for makeup artistry until after I finished my artistry program. I mean i've always thought makeup was cute but I never thought much else of it, after trying a few other things and not loving it I was looking for something I could do. I wanted to do something that would allow me to still be at home with my family because that is extremely important to me. I've always loved fashion and the industry as a whole, im obsessed with project runway but I can't design. I've seen every episode of America's next top model but I damn sure can't model *chuckles* so I figured hey, makeup. I went into the course knowing nothing but excited to be doing something for me! I remember my first assignment where I had to do someone's makeup and I used my neighbor. She like myself was a stay at home mom and she told me she hadn't worn makeup in years. I was an amateur and looking back on the application I sucked pretty bad but  she was ecstatic! She had tears in her eyes when she looked at herself in the mirror, she took so many  photots of herself to send to her family, and then she made her husband take her out to dinner. So that was when I knew that this was it for me, I had found my happy place.

Q: Why do you like working with makeup as a form of creative expression?

A: hmmmm well, as a working artist most of what I do is not really creative and I know that sounds crazy right? Most of the time i'm hired to do a job and the client already knows what they want, my job is to use my skill and deliver on what they want. (I have had clients that give me free reign to an extent) That's why I try to always do creative projects of my own or collaborations with other creatives. This is where I get to be free and do what feels good to me, it's where I get to bring my ego to work and show off a little bit. So in those cases I like working with makeup because it's something really special about being able to tie things together with my craft. It's like the icing on a really great cake, it has to be done beautifully and just the right way. It has the potential to make or break the look. I also really like it because i'm pretty good at it and who doesn't like doing what they're good at? So this blog will showcase alot of my creative work so stay tuned for that!

Q: Why you think makeup can make you feel ( confident, successful, pretty, etc)?

A: There's a quote by Bobbi Brown ( if you don't know who she is google her) that says "I believe all women are pretty without makeup and can be pretty powerful with the right makeup". I believe this quote to be true and I go into every interaction with a client this way. I am there to highlight the things I can see that they may not even know they have, whether it's their beautiful nose or the fierceness in them that I can see they hide most of the time. I am only there to enhance what you already have and when that's done you can't help but feel a bunch of things and they'll all be pretty powerful!

Q:Do You feel you have a signature style/look?

A: I don't know that i'd say I have a signature but the thing I hear the most is my work is really clean lol. I take that to mean that my looks are pretty simple compared to what's seen alot now. I don't think there's a name for that though.

Q: As an artist what skills do you think are your strength or where do you think you could improve or learn more?

A: My strength i'd say is skin, I lay a great foundation and i'm experienced in working with just about every skin tone Color matching came easy to me and it's something I take pride in. I'm always working and testing out different skin techniques because for me it's the most important part of any application. Uhhh i'd say I could improve on just about everything else lol. No but seriously I could improve on eyeshadow techniques and mascara application lol it bugs me!

Q: Who are your influences?

A: Ahhhh this is such a hard question because I have so many but i'll just name about ten of my favorites.

Reggie Wells
Way Bandy
Vivian Baker
Bobbi Brown
Lisa Eldridge
 Pat Mcgrath
Hung Vanngo
Renny Vasquez
Sandradene Fearon
Danessa Myricks

Q: What are your views on the pros vs influencers when it comes to makeup trends and the new age of makeup?

A: Yikes, this is a controversial one but since i'm not one to back down I guess i'll answer it lol I believe that the line between the two is very blurred and this is for many different reasons the main one being consumers. I don't view the two different lanes together at all. an influencer is there to push products, they do it in cute ways but thats the just of it. Makeup artist make a living from their artistry and would likely not be following the "trends" set by the influencers or using many of the products that they push. That is not to say makeup artist don't follow trends because we do, we just follow trends set by other profesionals. You'd find pro makeup artist using the trends you'd see at awards shows on A-listers, on the runways at fashion week, and in your big name magazines. So in short for me influencers don't create trends.

I think the family is having way too much fun without me so I'm gonna go get in where I fit in!! Thank you to everyone that read my first post, I hope you stick around for more. Tell me below what you do for a living and what else you'd like to read from me on my blog?!!
